World Patient Safety Day 2026: Safe care for life

World Patient Safety Day takes place on 17 September. This year’s theme is “Safe care for noncommunicable diseases”, supported by the message “Safe care for life!”

For people living with a thyroid condition, safe care is not limited to one appointment. It continues from the first conversation about symptoms through to diagnosis, treatment and ongoing monitoring.

Every step matters

Getting the right diagnosis
Patients need to feel listened to and have their symptoms properly investigated. An accurate and timely diagnosis is an important starting point for safe care.

Taking medication safely
Thyroid medication should be prescribed appropriately, taken as advised and reviewed when needed. If you are unsure how or when to take your medication, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

Regular monitoring
Blood tests and follow-up appointments help healthcare professionals check whether treatment is working as it should. They also provide an opportunity to discuss symptoms, test results and any concerns.

Having your say
You should be given clear information about your condition and care. You should also feel able to ask questions and be involved in decisions about your treatment.

The World Health Organization highlights the importance of involving people living with long-term conditions in their own care. Listening to patients and learning from their experiences can help make healthcare safer.

If you have questions about your medication, blood test results or treatment plan, speak to your healthcare professional. It is always reasonable to ask for something to be explained more clearly.
