International Thyroid Awareness Week Webinar

We are so pleased to let you know that Dr Gibran Timothy Yusuf,  Consultant Interventional Radiologist at Princess Royal University Hospital, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is speaking at our International Thyroid Awareness Week webinar on the 29th May 2025.

Dr Yusuf introduced microwave thyroid ablation, a treatment for thyroid nodules, in the UK.  He was the first to perform this operation in 2023 and has been performing it ever since.  He has explained:

“Thyroid nodules can affect people’s lives in many ways, often quite significantly, but with surgery leaving a scar across the neck and the risk of complications or lifelong medication patients have felt reluctant at times to proceed with surgery. Microwave Thyroid Ablation opens up an alternative to those who do not wish to have surgery, and is done in just one day through a pinhole incision achieving excellent results.”

Dr Yusuf told Thyroid UK, “We are slowly expanding the service and we just completed the first UK training workshop, so things are developing. I would say that so far patients have all been very pleased with the results and so have we.

Obviously, there is a selection process for who is best suited but it is quite a large proportion on people with nodules that can be treated with the major criteria being they are symptomatic with them.”

Thyroid UK believes that this intervention will be really helpful for a lot of people who have nodules that previously would probably have meant a hemi-thyroidectomy and a long recovery period.

Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust wrote an article about this on their website:

The BBC wrote an article on this in February 2024:

Dr Yusuf will explain what microwave thyroid ablation is about and also about the procedure.

If you have a nodule that your clinician is planning to remove, do discuss with them this procedure as it may be that you will fit the criteria.
