Phlebotomy Services

Phlebotomists are the people who take your blood, usually from a vein in your arm.

Most of us will need a blood test at some point in our lives.  Unfortunately not all of us can get to a hospital, GP surgery or chemist easily in order to have those blood tests taken.  There are lots of reasons why this might be the case.  For instance, we may not be able to get the time off work, we may be too ill to leave the house, we may have mobility problems that make journeys difficult or we may not have any transport and no-one to take us.

Private testing can be a good way to deal with this issue.  Some of the testing laboratories Thyroid UK is partnered with organise a phlebotomist for you.

However, if you need a private phlebotomist, Thyroid UK has a list of phlebotomists in different areas in the UK who can come and do this for you if you order private tests:

Useful Tips:

  • A fasting blood test means nothing to eat or drink, other than water, for 12 hours prior to the test and no alcohol for 24 hours before the test, unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

  • If you are cold your veins will be more difficult to find. Making sure you keep warm prior to your blood test will help to speed up the procedure.
