Public Health England

Public Health England exists to protect and improve the nation’s health and wellbeing and to reduce inequalities.  It provides national leadership and expert services to support public health and works with local government and the NHS to respond to emergencies.

Public Health England is responsible for making the public healthier by encouraging discussions, advising government and supporting action by local government, the NHS and other people and organisations.  It supports the public to enable them to protect and improve their own health and shares information and expertise with local authorities, industry and the NHS to help them to make improvements in the public’s health.

It also conducts research, collects and analyses data to improve our understanding of health, finds answers to public health problems, reports on improvements in the public’s health so everyone can understand the challenge and the next steps and helps local authorities and the NHS to develop the public health system and its specialist workforce.
